Day one of Gold Coast Schoolies 2009
Although the traditional student celebrations start today, thousands of school leavers arrived on the Gold Coast last night and are expecting to continue arriving throughout the day.
Police arrested three schoolies during the first 24-hours of the celebrations on the Gold Coast. The three males were arrested and charged for drunk and obstruct offences.
No schoolies were charged with drinking in public places.
Gold Coast District Officer Superintendent Jim Keogh said there were 49 people arrested on 54 charges which were not schoolies related and were mainly for public nuisance offences and other good order offences.
“In light of the overnight arrests it is timely to remind young people to be mindful of their behaviour and to look out for each other. It is an exciting time for them but that doesn’t excuse inappropriate actions. By all means keep an eye on your mate’s behaviour but don’t forget about your own.
“Police will act and any troublemakers identified early will be removed quickly to ensure public safety. It is about early intervention.”
“It is also important to remind schoolies participants: no ID, no wristband, no entry.
“Enjoy this special time in your life but remember don’t let it reflect badly on the rest of it,” said Superintendent Keogh.
