PCYC Week 2008, Sunday, July 19 - Saturday July 26

The Queensland Police-Citizens Youth Welfare Association (QPCYWA) is celebrating 60 years of partnerships with Queenslanders by launching PCYC Week, which will run from Saturday, July 19 to Saturday, July 26.

From humble beginnings with the first PCYC at Milton in 1948, the organisation has grown to encompass 45 branches across the state, with a membership of more than 68,500 and an annual attendance of more than 1.8 million people.

PCYC Week is an opportunity for the public to check out the activities on offer at their local branch, while partners, sponsors, supporters and volunteers will also be acknowledged.

Established in 1948 to forge positive relationships between police and young people, Acting CEO, Senior Sergeant Rob Fiedler believes the PCYC philosophy of “We want to get to the kids before the kids get to the police station,” has helped guide young people to make positive life choices.

“PCYC Week, 2008 is a great opportunity to promote the work of our association in the community,” Senior Sergeant Fiedler said.

“We are acknowledged as one of the largest providers of sporting and recreational opportunities and quality outside school hours child care for young people in the state of Queensland.

"Our programs are targeted to provide young people with developmental opportunities, life skills, employment and entertainment, all in a safe, supervised drug and alcohol-free environment.”

The official launch will be attended by Assistant Commissioner Alan Davey, Operations Support Command; PCYC Chairperson Mark Brand; and PCYC Acting CEO, Senior Sergeant Rob Fiedler.

The launch will feature a State of Origin style amateur boxing tournament, which comes to Queensland for the first time in 2008.

Billed the “Clash in Kedron,” the competition between Queensland and their arch rivals from New South Wales, will begin at 7pm on Saturday July 19, at Kedron-Wavell Services Club.

The night promises to highlight some talented young sports people, the likes of whom have continued their careers through to the Australian Institute of Sport.

Activities throughout PCYC Week will also include Blue Light Discos, a charity golf day and Volunteers Day luncheon on Wednesday, July 23 for those who have contributed 20 plus years of support to PCYC.

The luncheon will be held at Shangri La Reception Centre in Wynnum, owned by the late Dr Clem Jones who continues to support the work of PCYC via an ongoing annual bequest.

“We sincerely hope that as many members of the public as possible can visit one of our branches not only during the week but throughout the rest of this year and beyond,” Senior Sergeant Fiedler said.

“Our regional branches will not be waiting around to be part of the action of PCYC Week as some of them are also involved in launches of their own on Saturday, July 19 and Sunday, July 20.”
