Police officer charged with speeding, Brisbane

A Queensland Police Officer was today booked for speeding at 72kms an hour in a 60km zone after the unmarked car he was driving was stopped on the inner city bypass in Brisbane.

The Sergeant, who is based at Police Headquarters, was driving the Police Commissioner's car to an Australia Day event when he was detected at a LIDAR site at 7am and pulled over.

Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson was sitting in the front passenger seat of the vehicle reading briefings in preparation for his public engagements at the time of the detection, and was unaware of the speed being travelled by the vehicle or the speed limit for the stretch road on which they were travelling.

He expressed his apologies for the incident. The Sergeant who was driving is also highly embarrassed about the incident.

"As a service, we are constantly asking drivers to obey the road rules, and pay attention to the road conditions," Commissioner Atkinson said.

“This incident does not diminish the importance of that message.

"As police officers who enforce the road rules, we are put under much greater scrutiny than the general public about such matters, which is why we have informed the media about this matter,” he said.

The Sergeant who was driving, although believing he was in an 80km zone, accepts that this is no excuse, has accepted responsibility for the infringement and will pay the associated fine.

Additionally, all members of the service who are detected speeding face a separate disciplinary process.
