Afternoon Round-up

Fatal crash, Buddina: A man in his mid 30’s has been killed in a two vehicle crash this afternoon. It is believed a 4WD was turning right at the intersection of Point Cartwright Drive and Nicklin Way around 3.30pm when it has collided with a bike coming in the opposite direction. Police and QAS attended and treated the male rider but he died at the scene. The driver of the 4WD was uninjured. Investigations are continuing. Armed robbery, Ashmore: Police are investigating the armed robbery of a service station on Nerang Road around 4.40 this morning.  It is believed two men have smashed through the locked service station doors by throwing a rock at the glass before entering the store and approaching the attendant. One presented what appeared to be a handgun and demanded cash from the till. The attendant handed over a sum of cash before the men left the store and were last seen running along Nerang Road towards Nerang. Both men are described as Caucasian, approximately 184cm tall, of a medium build and aged 25 to 30. One man was wearing dark blue pants, an orange and blue ‘safety’ style shirt and black shoes. The second man was wearing a grey jumper. Both men had their faces covered by an item of clothing or cloth. Update – Operation Hotel Pedal: Operation Hotel Pedal commenced on 4 February 2009 and is transitioning into other operations within the Metropolitan South Region. Police from the South Brisbane and Oxley Districts conducted combined operations, which resulted in 257 offenders charged with 444 charges. Some of the more serious charges include robbery with violence, going armed to cause fear, affray, burglary, and stealing. There were 2313 random breath tests performed resulting in numerous charges for drink driving. The Operation has been very successful and offshoot operations are continuing. 

Serious crash, Landsborough: Police are investigating a two vehicle head-on collision that occurred at the intersection of Landsborough, Maleny and Old Maleny roads at Landsborough about 1.30pm yesterday. The male driver and sole occupant of one vehicle was airlifted to the Nambour Hospital in a serious condition. Ammendment - Serious assault of police officer, Alexandra Hills: Please be advised the 40-year-old man will appear in the Cleveland Magistrates Court on Monday not today as stated on the Morning Round-up: A 40-year-old man allegedly spat in the face of a police officer during an altercation at Alexandra Hills this morning. It is alleged police were assisting staff at a hotel on Finucane Road when the incident occurred around 12.30am. Police were restraining the Wynnum West man when he allegedly spat in the face of one male officer hitting him in the eye. The man then allegedly turned towards a second male officer and spat on him hitting the front of his shirt. The man is due to appear in the Cleveland Magistrates Court on Monday, March 2. He has been charged with one count each of fail to leave licensed premises and removal of person from premises and two counts of serious assault of police. The officer will undergo disease testing.
