Police Dog Ike euthanised

It is with great sadness that the Queensland Police Service announces that Police Dog Ike was euthanised today following a short illness. He was five-years-old.

Police Dog Ike saw active service with the Queensland Police Service from August 28 2006 to January this year and was attached to the Special Emergency Response Team.

Ike made a number of high profile apprehensions during his service, including knocking a fleeing offender off a bicycle during an arrest in January last year. This apprehension gained him national attention.

In late January, Ike was diagnosed with Canine Leukaemia. The prognosis was not positive.
Ike has been living at home with his handler and has been medicated to ensure he was comfortable. His condition deteriorated, and the decision was made to humanely euthanise him.

Senior Sergeant Terry Cantwell (State Coordinator) praised Ike for his service to the community:

“Ike was a great asset to the Police, his ability as a working dog was proven over and over again,” Senior Sergeant Cantwell said.

“He will be sadly missed by all members of the Dog Squad.”

Police Dog Ike will be cremated, and he will be the first Police Dog to be recognised on the QPS’s new Police Dog Wall of Remembrance, which is located at the QPS Police Dog training facility.

Ike’s legacy lives on, however. He has been a very successful foundation sire for the QPS dog breeding program, and he has progeny in service in the NSW and Victorian Police and the Royal Australian Air Force.
