Evening round-up
Robbery with violence, Redbank: A 27-year-old man was assaulted and robbed after he attempted to stop thieves stealing his car at Redbank this morning. Around 9.30 the man observed two men inside his car, which was parked adjacent to a loading dock at the rear of a Target store at the Redbank Plaza Shopping Centre. The man challenged the two thieves at which point he was thrown up against another vehicle and a screwdriver held to his back. The men stole his car keys and mobile phone before trying to start his car with the keys. The hapless thieves were unable to start the vehicle and fled on foot. They were last seen heading along Fox Street. Anyone with information which could assist police with their investigations should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Fatal crash, Beechmont: A 56-year-old Kuraby man died this afternoon after the motorcycle he was riding collided with an articulated truck and trailer on Beechmont Road, Lower Beechmont. Around 1.15pm the man was traveling down Lower Beechmont Drive when his bike collided with an on-coming vehicle. The man was transported to the Gold Coast Hospital where he later passed away. The 38-year-old male driver of the truck was uninjured. The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
Suspected arson, Sunnybank: Police are treating a fire that destroyed approximately 15 acres of bushland at Sunnybank this afternoon as suspicious. Around 12.10pm residents in Woff Street, Sunnybank advised emergency services of several fires in grassland located behind the Sunnybank railway station. No one was injured as a result of the blazes and police investigations are continuing. Serious crash, Southport: Four people were hospitalised after a car crashed into the front fence of a house in Southport this afternoon. Around 5.45pm a car traveling along Brooke Street collided with another vehicle at the intersection with Deacon Street sending the car careening into a nearby brick fence. The elderly male and female occupants of the car were trapped in the vehicle before being transported to the Gold Coast Hospital with non life threatening injuries. A male and female pedestrian received minor injuries when they sat on the brick fence to assist the trapped couple and the wall collapsed. All four people were transported to the Gold Coast Hospital for treatment. The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating and initial reports indicate the male driver may have suffered a medical incident prior to the crash.
Attempted armed robbery, Sunnybank Hills: Police are searching for two men who attempted to rob a Sunnybank Hills fast food store at gun point this evening. Just before 8pm the men entered the Jackson Road take-away shop armed with a handgun and demanded cash from a male employee. The man refused and called out to a second employee for assistance which resulted in the offenders turning around and fleeing the shop empty handed. One of the men is described as 185cms tall, Caucasian, proportionate build wearing a black hoodie, green baseball cap, dark jeans and black sandshoes with white laces. The second man is described as 170cms tall, wearing a grey long sleeve hoodie, jeans, white sandshoes and a red bandana covering his face.
