Evening round-up

Update, fatal traffic crash, near South Kolan:  A traffic crash near South Kolan today claimed the lives of two people and left two others seriously injured. Around 2.05pm two vehicles, a sedan and a van, collided head-on on the Bundaberg-Gin Gin Road approximately 10 kilometres west of South Kolan. The occupants of the car, a 30-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman are believed to have died instantly. The occupants of the van were trapped in their vehicle before being freed by emergency services. A 49-year-old woman was airlifted to Bundaberg Base Hospital before being transferred to the Royal Brisbane Hospital in a critical condition.  The male driver, a 62-year-old man, is currently in the Bundaberg Base Hospital in a serious but stable condition. All four are from the Gin Gin area. The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

Results, traffic operation, Runaway Bay: Police conducted 750 Random Breath Tests and issued 35 Traffic Infringement Notices (TIN) during operation Red Fin. The joint traffic operation was conducted by police from Runaway Bay, Southport and the Gold Coast Traffic Branch between 9am and 3pm today. The high visibility traffic operation staged on major Gold Coast arterial roads netted one drink driver, a disqualified 76-year-old male driver who allegedly recorded a breath alcohol concentration of 0.52% and one vehicle was seized for being uninured, unregistered and the driver unlicensed. Other TIN’s included 15 driving whilst using a mobile phone, nine driving licence infringements, three registration infringements, one red light infringement and seven other traffic breaches.

Armed robbery, Nundah: Police are looking for two males who robbed a Nundah jewellery and clothing store this afternoon. Around 1pm the pair entered the Station Street store and commenced browsing at jewellery. The female attendant noticed an item of jewellery missing and challenged the men. One of the men then produced a knife and the pair fled the store. They were last seen running towards the Nundah Railway Station. One of the men is described as Caucasian, aged in his mid 20’s, approximately 188cms tall with a solid build and curly sandy hair. He was wearing a grey jacket and low slung jeans. The second male is described as aged in his mid teens, considerably shorter than the first man, visible tattoos and wearing a short sleeved shirt. No one was injured during the robbery and police investigations are continuing. Serious crash, Abbotsford via South Kolan: A teen boy is in a critical condition in Bundaberg Base Hospital following a single vehicle rollover this afternoon. Around 4pm the utility which the boy was driving crashed on Jones Road, Abbotsford; an isolated rural road. The driver was thrown from the vehicle and pinned under the chassis. A passing motorist came across the crash site around 6.10pm. The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

Assault police, Chermside: A female constable suffered a split lip after she was allegedly punched in the mouth when speaking to a man at Chermside this afternoon. Around 2.30pm police were called to a newsagency on Gympie Road in relation to an altercation. Whilst the officer was making inquiries into this incident a man allegedly became aggressive and struck the officer in the face. A struggle ensued during which time police deployed OC spray before managing to restrain the man. A 27-year-old Zillmere man has been charged with two counts of assault police and one count each of wilful exposure and obstruct police. He is due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court tomorrow. A male officer received bruising to his temple during the altercation and both officers were treated at the scene by the QAS for minor injuries.
