Around 3.58pm the two vehicle crash occurred on the ?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Kennedy Highway at the intersection of Shroj Road at Emerald Creek. Preliminary investigations suggest there was a slow line of traffic travelling east on the Kennedy Highway. A motorbike ridden by a 54-year-old man and his 52-year-old female pillion passenger was in a group of four motorcycles and approached a Toyota Landcruiser utility from behind. The utility has indicated to turn right into Shroj Road and proceeded to brake. The bike has braked heavily behind the utility and veered into the westbound lane and moved across the southern edge of the roadway. The motorcycle has dropped and the rider and pillion passenger have slid across the road and through a table drain and came to rest in the middle of Shroj Road. The pillion passenger was then hit by the utility as it completed its turn. The driver of the utility immediately stopped and rendered assistance. A police officer returning to Mareeba station came across the crash moments after it occurred and performed CPR on the female pillion passenger until ambulance officers arrived. Both riders were taken to the Mareeba Hospital. The woman was pronounced deceased a short time later. The man suffered a broken hand and a gash to his head. The driver of the utility was uninjured. ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
