Murder charge, Burleigh Heads: A 36-year-old Burleigh Heads man has been charged with murder following the suspicious death of a 41-year-old woman this morning. Around 1.30am police were called to a residence on Seric Way at Burleigh Heads where they located the woman deceased. The man will appear in the Southport Magistrates Court tomorrow.
Police rescue man from fire, Carina: Two constables have been praised for their efforts this morning after they dragged a man from his burning bedroom at Carina. Around 2.50am neighbours heard a fire alarm go off in a unit on Adelaide Street but were unable to rouse the 45-year-old occupant. Police attended and saw the man asleep on his bed. After he failed to wake up to their shouting and knocks on the door, they broke down the back door and rescued him from his bedroom which was on fire. He was treated at the scene by the QAS for smoke inhalation. QFRS extinguished the fire which fortunately did not badly damage the unit. It appears the fire started after a cigarette fell from an ashtray and ignited a pile of magazines and newspapers on the floor of the man’s bedroom.
Robbery, South Brisbane: Investigations are continuing into a robbery at South Brisbane on Saturday morning. Two men, aged 25 and 23, were walking along Stephens Road around 12.20am when they were approached by a man who asked for their wallets. They ignored the man and continued walking when the man punched the 23-year-old in the back of the head causing him to fall to the ground. A vehicle containing a number of males then pulled over and one of the males got out of the vehicle and began to assault both men. The 23-year-old handed over his wallet but it was returned to him after the offenders realised there was no money inside. The offenders got into the vehicle, which is described as an older model white Holden Commodore sedan, and drove away. The two victims received facial injuries in the robbery. Both offenders are described as being Caucasian and in their early 20s. One had short spiky blonde hair, a medium build and was approximately 175cm tall. The second man has a shaved head, a slim build and is also around 175cm tall.

Operation Stopper, Metro North Region: Nearly 6,500 random breath tests were conducted this weekend when North Brisbane police once again targeted irresponsible drivers leaving the Brisbane CBD. Regional Traffic Coordinator, Inspector Jac Feather, said 100 people were detected drink driving with police intercepting the highest reading of .197 % on Abbottsford Road at Bowen Hills. “Drink driving continues to contribute to a number of serious and fatal crashes across the State and it is disappointing that motorists continue to underestimate the serious consequences of this behaviour,” he said. Another 13 people were caught driving unlicensed or disqualified, ten for seatbelt offences, six for driving unregistered vehicles and 43 drivers intercepted for other traffic offences. Inspector Feather said police will continue to conduct operations such as Stopper particularly in the lead up to Christmas to ensure those caught flouting the law were caught and prosecuted.
