Queensland Police to award former members

Retired former Queensland Police officers will now be able to receive the Queensland Police Service Medal (QPSM).

Officers are awarded the QPSM in recognition of their diligent and ethical service. It is a police award approved by the Commissioner under the provisions of the Police Service Administration Act.

Commissioner Bob Atkinson said the medal, up until now, had been awarded to current serving police and staff members after 10 years of qualifying service.

“Former members of the Queensland Police Service who meet the eligibility criteria can now apply to receive the QPSM,” Commissioner Atkinson said.

“The award is internal to the QPS and is awarded to members in recognition of their diligent and ethical service.”

Former members can make application to the Service’s Honours and Awards Unit or through the State Management Committee of the Retired Police Association. These applications can be made by a current serving QPS member or, in the case of retired officer’s, by the State Management Committee of the Retired Police Association.

Commissioner Atkinson said the applications will be subject to a formal application process before his final approval, based on determination that the applicant is a fit and proper person to receive the award.

Once approved the QPSM medals will be presented at award ceremonies that regularly occur around the State. The QPSM however, will not be awarded posthumously to former members of the QPS.

“If a recipient is unable to attend one of these ceremonies, then alternative arrangements will be made in consultation with the recipients,” Commissioner Atkinson said.

“Many former members of the QPS served the people of Queensland for more than three decades and did not receive any Queensland-based awards recognising their contributions.

“I see this as a fitting opportunity to recognise the service and commitment of our former members,” Commissioner Atkinson said.
