Lock it or loose it, even in the heat

Townsville police are reminding motorists, residents and business owners that as the temperature rises they still need to secure their property or risk loosing it.

Detective Inspector Cheryl Scanlon, Townsville District Officer, said that as the temperature steadily climbs people are more inclined to leave windows down and doors open not only making way for cool breezes but opportunistic thieves.

“Over the past week we have noticed an increase in break-ins of homes, and businesses and want to remind everyone to secure their property and help reduce the opportunities for thieves to strike.”

Detective Inspector Scanlon said that local police had notice a rise in businesses being broken into during night time hours and homes during daylight hours, over the past week.

“Thieves obviously will target areas where they expect no one to be home or to be in attendance, thus businesses at night and homes during the day

“Business owners and home owners can reduce their risk significantly by ensuring they lock and secure their premises’” she said.

Vehicle owners are also more likely to leave windows down and vehicles not securely locked as the temperature rises, thus creating more opportunities for criminals.

“The temptation for car drivers is to leave windows down and the temptation for thieves is to break into them.

“Leaving vehicles unsecured and windows partially down creates additional opportunities for thieves. Avoid the inconvenience of having your car broken into and your property stolen by ensure your vehicle is always secure’” Detective Inspector Scanlon said.

Police are urging anyone who notices any suspicious activity around business properties or homes to call their local police
