Afternoon Round-up

Large bush fire, Rosedale: Police declared an emergency situation at 3.10pm this afternoon in response to a large bush fire currently burning in the Rosedale area. The declaration covers the area bordering Tablelands Road, between Gorge Road and Lowmead Road east (following Gorge Road) and north east to Bundaberg Lowmead Road, to where they connect. Mitchell Road, a gravel road, is currently closed. Residents in the Lowmead, Agnes Waters and Rosedale areas are advised to remain vigilant and to monitor updates issued by the Department of Community Safety (media releases) and the QFRS Rural Operations website at www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au or at www.fire.qld.gov.au. Residents should also monitor local media for updates.

Police would like to remind motorists and members of the public that travel can be extremely hazardous due to bushfires and associated smoke haze, and non essential travel in the area should be limited.

Update, fatal crash, Tinbeerwah: A 34-year-old Cooroy man died this morning following a three vehicle crash at Tinbeerwah. Initial investigations indicate that around 11.25am a vehicle was traveling west along the Cooroy Noosa Road, Tinbeerwah when it collided with an on-coming vehicle, causing that car to spin out of the way, before the westbound vehicle struck a van, which had been traveling behind the second car. The driver and sole occupant of the westbound vehicle died at the scene. A 60-year-old Coolum Beach man, the driver and sole occupant of the van, was trapped for a period of time before being airlifted to the Royal Brisbane Hospital with severe leg injuries, while a 60-year-old Kenilworth man, the driver and sole occupant of the second car, was uninjured. The road was closed for several hours before re-opening around 3pm. The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

Serious crash, Eagle Heights: A woman was airlifted to hospital after her vehicle rolled several times during a single vehicle crash at Eagle Heights this morning. Around 4.30am a sedan was traveling in a westerly direction along Macdonnell Road, Eagle Heights when it veered onto a grass verge and traveled down a steep embankment, rolling several times before coming to rest approximately 20 metres below. Emergency service personnel were advised around 6am of the crash after the driver and sole occupant managed to use her mobile and call for help. The 27-year-old Eagle Heights woman was airlifted to Gold Coast Hospital with serious injuries. The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

Dangerous driving charge, Bundall: An 18-year-old Clear Island man has been charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle after a car crashed into a house at Bundall early this morning. Around 4.40am the vehicle crashed through a front fence and came to rest against a house in Salemo Street. All three occupants of the car, the male driver and two male passengers, aged 19 and 20, were transported to the Gold Coast Hospital for treatment to minor injuries. No one in the house was injured. The man was also charged with failing to remain at the scene and is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on December 1. Investigations are continuing.

Appeal for witnesses, serious assault, Everton Park: Police are appealing for witnesses after an 18-year-old Everton Park man was seriously assaulted on Saturday October 24. Around 11pm the man was walking along Deakin Street, near the corner with South Pine Road (and the Everton Park State School) when he was assaulted by unknown person/s and left lying in the street with head injuries. The man managed to contact friends who transported him to hospital where he received treatment for injuries including several facial fractures. Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or noticed any suspicious persons or activity in the area around the time to contact Ferny Grove CIB on 3872 1566 or Crime Stoppers anonymously via 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au 24hrs a day.
