Media Release

Punters have more to lose than just their shirts

Police are warning Melbourne Cup party-goers to plan their trip home in advance, or risk losing more than their shirts.

Deputy Commissioner Ian Stewart said that police encourage party-goers to use public transport, taxis or a designated driver if they intend to have a drink.

“Plan your trip home before you go out for the day,” he said.

“Police patrols will be out on the roads to detect drink drivers and other traffic offences, if you are planning to have a drink tomorrow, don’t drive.”

Deputy Commissioner Stewart also said that police would be visible to ensure that Melbourne Cup celebrations were safe and fun for everybody.

“I am reminding the community that it is illegal to consume alcohol in public places, and officers will be patrolling near licensed venues and race tracks to monitor crowd behaviour.

“Police will not tolerate antisocial behaviour which has the potential to ruin the big occasion for you and other people,” he said.

“With the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting 35 degrees for the South East tomorrow, we’re asking people to act with restraint.

“We remind everyone that one punch can kill and destroy people’s lives. Don’t take that chance,” Deputy Commissioner Stewart said.

I hope everyone is a winner on Melbourne Cup day – act responsibly to ensure your safety and of all those around you.
