Afternoon Round-up for Wednesday February 17, 2010
Serious assault, Fortitude Valley: Police are appealing for witnesses to a serious assault at Fortitude Valley on February 14. The incident occurred near the taxi rank between Warner and the Brunswick Street Mall. Around 5.30am two men became involved in a verbal argument which resulted in a man being punched in the face. The man was taken to hospital and suffered a fractured cheekbone. It is believed there were several people in the vicinity at the time and police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to contact Fortitude Valley Police or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
Missing bushwalkers located, Mount Barney: Three bushwalkers who had been missing in Mount Barney National Park since yesterday have been winched out by helicopter and are safe and well. The trio comprising of one woman and two men were located at the base of the east peak at Mount Barney around 2pm. They are all in good health but have some minor scratches.
Fatal, Burleigh Heads: Police are still trying to identify a man killed when he was struck by a car while crossing the Gold Coast Highway at Burleigh this morning. The collision occurred around 8.10am in the northbound lanes near the intersection with Ferny Fairway. Two passer-bys performed CPR on the man but he died at the scene. The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating. The man is described as being aged between 20 to 30 years. Shooting charges, Bundaberg: A 24-year-old Bundaberg man has been charged after he allegedly fired an air rifle at a passer-by around 6.30pm yesterday in Quay Street, Bundaberg. A 17-year-old man received a minor injury to his arm and was treated at the Bundaberg Base Hospital. The 24-year-old man has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm whilst armed, and dangerous conduct with a weapon. He is due to appear in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court on March 8.
