Morning Round-up

Robbery, Runcorn: Police are investigating a robbery on Glenefer Street at Runcorn last night. Around 10.30 a 22-year-old woman was walking along the street when a man jumped out of a red 2007 Mazda 3 (QLD rego 017KQN) and snatched the woman’s handbag and in the process knocked her over. The man ran back to the car, containing several other males, and got inside. He was pursued by the woman who reached inside the car through an open passenger window in an attempt to retrieve the handbag. She was unsuccessful and the car took off along Glenefer Street towards Eiley Street. The woman received minor injuries to her legs. The offender is described as being around 20 years of age and had brown/tanned skin with black hair. Anyone with information which could assist police with their investigations should contact Crime Stoppers anonymously via 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au 24hrs a day.

Swimmers stranded, Josephine Falls (Innisfail): Police were called to Josephine Falls near Babinda, in the Bartle Frere National Park around 6.20pm last night. Initial reports received indicated four swimmers were stranded on the other side of the bank due to rapid rise in the water levels. Police officers along with emergency services managed to rescue the swimmers. The four, two men and two women in their 20’s are safe and well.

Chemical spill on highway, Wandoan: Police are investigating the single vehicle incident where a rear trailer of a road train truck has become separated and overturned into a gully in the Leichhardt Highway. The incident occurred approximately 20 kilometres north of Wandoan between No.4 and Yeovil Roads around 10.15am yesterday.  No one was injured during the incident. The trailer contained chemicals which spilled into the gully. Emergency Services attended and contained the chemical spill. Police investigations continue.

Search and rescue, Airlie Beach: Police and Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) rescued four people after their boat sunk between Airlie Beach and Black Island last night. Around 7pm police received a distress call indicating a vessel was taking on water. When police and VMR arrived they were able to pull two men, aged 39 and 36, and two women, aged 33 and 29, to safety uninjured. Initial investigations suggest their vessel broke down and was then hit by large waves causing it to overturn.
