Media Release

Flood water exclusion zone, Rockhampton

Due to the hazardous and unpredictable nature of flood waters an exclusion zone for all water vessels, or any person in the water, is in place in Rockhampton.

The exclusion zone is between Goodsell Street and the Riverside Tourist Park on Reaney Street.

This area is considered extremely dangerous due to low hanging live overhead power lines

Rockhampton Inspector Peter Flanders said police would enforce the exclusion zone and urged people to show some common sense and not to risk their lives for a joy trip through flood waters

“Travelling through the flood waters at this location is extremely dangerous due to low lying power lines, it is important that the power to the Rockhampton Sewerage Treatment Plan remain switched on

The only way we can ensure this is by making sure people do not take unnecessary risks and do not travel anywhere in the exclusion zone

“Police will be patrolling the ‘no-go zone’ and anyone found to be breaching it could be prosecuted,” Inspector Flanders said

Police would also like to remind members of the public that unnecessary travel in flood waters, even by boat, can be risky due to debris, currents, wildlife and other contaminants. Non essential travel should be restricted

“We appreciate that people want to see what damage the floods have done but now is not the time for sight seeing and unnecessary travel through flood waters. They are dangerous and unpredictable with many unseen hazards,” Inspector Flanders said.

Police again are warning members of the public not to attempt to cross flooded roads or causeways or enter flood waters.  Do not risk your life, the lives of those in your vehicle and the lives of rescuers. Nothing is so important that you need to enter floodwaters.
