Peter Wheelhouse is the Programme Director of the Drug Interventions Programme (DIP) at the United Kingdom Home Office – a post he has held since the beginning of the Programme in 2003. He now also has national responsibility for the Prolific and other Priority Offenders (PPO) Programme. Both Programmes form part of the Police and Crime Standards Directorate at the Home Office.
Peter has over 30 years experience in law enforcement and criminal justice roles. He spent his early career as an operational officer, which included dealing with immigration issues at Heathrow Airport and overseas as a visa officer in India and Pakistan. Peter has worked widely with the police service and other criminal justice partners, ranging from policy and legislation (such as leading work on the creation of the Metropolitan Police Authority) to performance management. Prior to his current role, Peter was Head of Police Information and Communications Technology in the Home Office and was a Board member of the Police Information Technology Organisation. He has worked closely with the private sector including the travel and IT industries. Peter is a member of the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) Drugs Committee. In early 2007 Peter was a Visiting Expert to the United Nations Asia and Far East Institute (UNAFEI) 135th International Senior Seminar in Japan where he worked with delegates from 18 countries as well as lecturing at the Japanese Ministry of Justice. |
