RESULTS
At 8:00am on Tuesday 24th May 2005 the hooter started and first heat in the Surfing for the Fujitsu Police & Emergency Services Games began. The four surfers paddled out at a small peak south of the sand pumping jetty at The Spit, Southport. The surf was a contestable 2-3 foot but with predictions of decreasing swell, it was determined that competitors would surf in two rounds of 20 minute heats.

Like all surfers competing, they had 20 minutes to catch the best waves possible and perform radical controlled manoeuvres in the critical section of a wave with speed, power and flow to maximise scoring potential.

The fully accredited judges from Surfing Australia allowed the competitors to concentrate on the task at hand and ensured a high level of professionalism and consistency in scoring. They also assisted greatly in ensuring that the heats ran fluidly.

After the first round of 10 heats there were a number of close heats as competitors revelled in the small but glassy conditions.

With the commencement of the second round wave quality started to deteriorate rapidly as the tide went out and surfers searched for scoring waves. As the judges ‘opened’ up the scoring to match the conditions, Round 2 determined the final results with a number of upsets occurring, particularly in the women’s longboard.

The event wrapped up at 3.30pm with the presentation of the medals to the winners of the various divisions. To compliment the medals, Fullbore of Torquay Victoria, supplied a range of their excellent travel covers and accessories which were greatly appreciated by the recipients. Fullbore are very supportive of this event, and manufacture a great range of high quality surfing hardware that can handle anything.
