| After all the rain during the over the previous two days the aquathon started in magnificent sunshine, the venue being the Queensland Police Academy. Competitors were briefed regarding the setup of the course, which was a 300m pool swim followed by a 2km flatish run which was to be repeated twice. Despite not doing any swimming training James Owen managed to have a slight edge in the pool, just ahead of Sally Brouwer and Haico Aaldering after the 300m swim. Jim was clearly more at home on the run leg and managed to have a 37 second advantage over Sally at the halfway mark. Other competitors Haico, Mark Lawton, Patricia Bailey and Wayne Metcalfe worked very hard during the run leg and were not that far from each other at any stage of the event. Most competitors struggled during the second swim leg with noticeable technique changes compared to the first swim leg. Jimmy Owen kept strong until the completion of the event winning in a time of 25 minutes and 37 seconds just over a minute ahead of the ladies winner Sally Brouwer. Haico Aaldering, despite thinking he was finished at the halfway mark had an excellent event finishing 1st in the 40-44yrs age group. Mark Lawnton finished full of running to be 2nd in the 35-39 yrs age group. My apologies go to Patricia Bailey and Wayne Metcalfe who completed the course on the Sunday 9th September due to a confusion with the starting date. Thankyou to all competitors. |
