Martial Arts - All Styles
WHEN: Saturday 17th September 2011, starting at 10.00am
WHERE: Queensland Police Academy (Main Hall) Rudd Street, OXLEY 4108
OVERVIEW: The competition consists of: Kata (demonstration of technique); Kumite (sparring); and an Open demonstration event. It is aimed at ALL LEVELS and COLOUR BELTS of martial arts.
This competition has evolved since 1999 when it was first offered at the Australia & New Zealand Police Games – Gold Coast. Each Police Games has seen a variety of competitors from varying martial art forms including: Ju-Jitsu; Karate; Taekwondo; Muay Thai & Kick-Boxing; Wing Chung Kung Fu; American Kenpo; Jeet Kune Do; and Ninjitsu compete on equal ground. Winners of the Games have come from Shinbukan Karate; Jim Brophy Australasian Taekwondo & Hapkido; and Koshiki Karate.
The Kumite is ‘light-contact’ with all forms of Martial Arts competing on equal terms. The format of the fighting contest is restricted to traditional style sparring and fighting and excludes elbows; throws; grappling; or any other close-quarter style contact martial art. Kumite is intended to attract all styles of Martial Arts. It is designed to enable participants to compete on equal terms. Progress to the final rounds occurs via round by round elimination, with a possible repechage for those eliminated should numbers dictate.
Kata consists of a progressive round by round elimination, and players are expected to perform a minimum of three (3) different kata forms.
In 2007, a demonstration event was offered for Weapons and/or miscellaneous events such as Choreographed self defence or discipline specific demonstration or individual weapon use such as nun-chukkas or Bo-staff. This will again be offered and opens up an opportunity to display unique or discipline specific demonstrations.
Standard or School specific Martial Arts uniform required to be worn during the competition. Those participating in Kumite must wear a mouth guard, in addition to fist, shin and instep protectors. Headgear optional but recommended. Equipment will be available for use by those participants not in possession of their own protective gear.
Events may be divided into belt and/or experience levels to ensure equity in the competition. Events offered are subject to change at the discretion of Games Management. All entries subject to vetting by the Sport Coordinator.
Rules to be supplied at player meeting prior to the commencement of competition. Player meeting at 09:30am. Alternately, rules can be e-mailed or may be accessed on the Games website.
Kata will be conducted first, then Open demonstration followed by the Kumite to end the event. Presentations will be conducted at the conclusion of the Kumite event.
The Noel HATTWELL perpetual trophy is to be presented to the ‘Best and Fairest’ competitor who competes in both the Kata and Kumite events and achieves the best overall score/placings from those events. Also, the Jim STACKPOOLE Encouragement perpetual trophy will be awarded again this year for encouragement to the competitor who displays the ‘Best Spirit" in competition.
