Information Management Division

The Information Management Division provides technical and professional support for police throughout the State through the provision of information systems and services, as well as providing specific services to authorised agencies and members of the public.

The Information Management Division comprises of the following: Information Planning Branch, Information Systems Branch, Information Resource Centre, Police Information Centre, and Information Security Section

Information Planning Branch is responsible for providing strategic focus through the development, review and improvement of information management and technology to support policing, including:

• the Information Management Planning Framework;
• the Information Strategic and Operational Plans; and
• the evaluation of Information Services

Information Systems Branch (ISB) is responsible for the provision, development and operation of corporate Information and Communications Technology (ICT), and its associated infrastructure, for the Queensland Police Service.

Responsibility for the overall operations of ISB and the data network that links QPS sites to the central computer system rests with the Manager, ISB, while the following sections have specific functions:

• Business Services is responsible for a range of activities with whole-of-branch impacts, including operation of the Project Office, responsibility for the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL); the development and management of Performance Agreements; operation of the Service Centre; vendor management; management of the development and maintenance of the QPS Enterprise Architecture, and managing the relationship with QPS and external clients.
  
• Business Systems provides application software management and data management resources for the design, construction, testing and implementation of corporate systems. This section also supports developed and packaged systems, and ensures that these systems inter-operate.
  
• Technical Infrastructure manages and maintains the hardware aspects of the QPS computer systems, including the central corporate computers and the desktop computers throughout the Service. It also manages the software operations for the overall QPS computer system.
  
• Business Support provides administrative services and support to Branch managers and staff on human resources, finance, purchasing and records management.

• the input, extraction and analysis of data and the development of innovative technological solutions for contemporary policing issues;
• the provision of statistical consultancy and analysis services and official QPS crime statistics;
• the provision of web technology to QPS in the form of web-based information services;
• the provision of geographical information services and products related to computerised mapping, paper-based mapping, geographic analysis and use of computer mapping technology;
• the provision of effective library services to all staff throughout the State.

• recording and maintaining offence and other information on the Crime Reporting Information System for Police (CRISP);
• recording and maintaining offender information including offender details, court diversionary processes and court results from QPS-initiated prosecutions;
• warrant management;
• stolen vehicle records management;
• providing police and Crown prosecutors with Australia-wide criminal history information;
• providing QPS officers with information held by PIC such as certified copies of warrants, domestic violence orders, criminal offence and other reports;
• providing QPS officers with information obtained from other police jurisdictions such as driver’s licence details;
• assisting QPS members to access information through a Help Desk facility;
• providing information held by PIC to other police and law enforcement agencies; and
• providing information held by PIC to government departments and agencies as required by law.

• development of policies and procedures related to information security;
• provision of awareness training, advice and guidance on information security-related issues;
• provision of internal and external email systems;
• review and evaluation of information security requirements for the development or purchase of computer systems and software packages;
• review and evaluation of existing computer systems to ensure compliance to current security standards;
• provision of access controls by issuing user-IDs and passwords to authorised users;
• undertake and/or assist with investigations of information security breaches of QPS computer systems; and
• performance of information system security audits
