Employment Entitlements

Queensland police officers enjoy attractive remuneration and conditions in return for meeting the demanding requirements of the job. Benefits include:
  • a starting income of approximately $56,081* per annum (including operational shift allowance of 21%);
  • the Police Service Award (State) provides for a 38-hour working week, however, a police officer performs 40 hours of rostered duty per week. This enables one additional day off every 28 days, in addition to normal rest days;
  • overtime rates apply for time worked in excess of rostered hours;
  • 228 hours annual leave (that is, six weeks per year) plus 114 hours sick leave per year (cumulative) and three months long service leave after 10 years' service;
  • police uniforms are provided free of charge; and
  • parental leave and paid maternity leave entitlements.

There are also significant benefits to serving in remote areas (remote areas|374587|application/pdf 365KB) of Queensland.

Upon induction, constables commence as members of the Q Super superannuation scheme. Membership is a compulsory condition of employment and the standard rate of contribution is 6% of salary. Members of other Queensland Government superannuation schemes have established portability arrangements with Q Super to allow for the transfer of benefits. However, members of interstate superannuation schemes should enquire whether transfer of benefits could be arranged to the Q Super scheme or preserved in the existing scheme until retirement.
