Tips to Give You the Edge in the Selection Process

The best advice on being competitive in the selection process is to ensure you complete your application with full disclosure and ensure that you meet all minimum requirements prior to submitting your application.

More importantly ensure you are prepared for all the selection components.

PHYSICAL

• Prepare for the physical requirements by increasing your fitness through regular training.
• If you find it difficult to train solo then consider investing in a personal trainer to help you reach your goals.
• Refer to the Health Screening and Physical Skills Education Program brochure.

PSYCHOMETRIC TESTS

• Make sure you are well rested and alert on the day of testing.
• Read the information related to the tests on the website so you are aware of each test/ questionnaire and what the requirements are of a police officer.
• The test of cognitive ability is a test of your verbal, numerical and abstract reasoning.  As it is a timed test you will need to work through as quickly as possible while being as accurate as you can in your responses.
• If it has been some time since you took a test or were required to use the abilities being tested it will help to brush up on your mathematical, problem solving and language skills.  The internet is a great source of information on psychometric tests and sample questions.
• There is little you can do to prepare for the personality questionnaires.  Remember to avoid skipping any questions and choose the first response that comes to mind.

INTERVIEW

• Make sure you have done your homework on the requirements on the role of a police officer and on the requirements at the police academy.
• Talk to a police officer to find out what they do.
• Arrive on time.
• Prepare examples for each of the selection criteria that best shows your understanding of the role and your abilities in this area.
• Refer to the Recruit Assessment Information Brochure
• Be yourself.
