A Message from Commissioner of Police, Bob Atkinson

R Atkinson - Commissioner Domestic and family violence is a complex social problem within our community. Often what can make this problem so complex is that domestic and family violence can remain silent and hidden within the home.

There are three important elements to be aware of with domestic and family violence:

  • Domestic and family violence does not discriminate – it is not limited to a specific age, income, race or sexual preference.
  • Domestic and family violence is complex – it includes emotional abuse, physical acts of violence, sexual abuse, in addition to social isolation and financial deprivation.
  • Domestic and family violence is difficult to accurately measure - due to the complex cyclic and private nature of domestic and family violence, it is difficult to accurately measure how many Queensland families are affected. It is not until the threat of violence escalates to actual physical or sexual violence, that the hidden nature of domestic and family violence may be revealed.

What we do know about domestic violence is that it can lead to many more problems other than immediate injury and trauma.

Children who experience domestic violence may be severely affected throughout their lives.

Domestic violence can often lead to children repeating the pattern themselves, either as an aggrieved or as a respondent.

Domestic violence can escalate rapidly from minor occurrences to a life threatening incident.

For many reasons, it is important to break the silence and contact police and other agencies that can assist with this problem.

It is important for people to take positive steps in helping themselves – if you need assistance or support please contact an agency that will help you. Find a safe place to ring someone to speak with.

If you are a person who commits domestic or family violence you are hurting the most important people in your life.  Please take responsible steps to ensure you stop your abusive behaviour and learn how to change the way you react

Only YOU can stop the cycle of domestic and family violence.

Bob Atkinson APM
Commissioner of Police
