Australasian Policing Strategy on Family Violence

Report on the Prevention and Reduction of Family Violence

The Australasian Prevention and Reduction of Family Violence has been developed by the Australasian Police Commissioners to work together to reduce and prevent family violence through strong, consistent and compassionate responses.

Family violence is a serious crime that damages our community at all levels and central to this strategy is the safety and well being of victims.

Australian State and Territory Police and NZ Police have joined together to develop this landmark Strategy, that sets out ten Priorities for Action to reduce and prevent family violence.

The national strategy provides a framework for reducing and preventing family violence at a local and national level.  Some of the strategy’s core principles include:

  • Every adult and child has a right to a safe environment.  For this reason the protection of all victims of family violence, including children, is of paramount concern to police in all jurisdictions.
  • Zero tolerance to perpetrators of family violence – perpetrators will be held accountable for their actions.
  • To improve outcomes for victims of family violence partnerships will be developed to provide effective, consistent, frontline policing responses.
  • Identification of high risk groups and implementation of targeted education and programs to assist them.
  • Integrated intelligence gathering and information sharing locally and nationally.

All Australasian policing jurisdictions are committed to better protection for victims of Family Violence, and this strategy outlines a path to improvement.

This strategy provides a clear direction to limit the impact of family violence into the future.

Every adult and child has the right to a safe environment.
