Illegal/Offensive Internet material
The Australian Broadcasting Authority (ABA) assists the different sectors
of the television, radio and Internet industries to develop codes of practice
relating to content and complaints handling and investigates complaints about
inappropriate content on broadcasting services and the Internet.
The ABA administers a 'co-regulatory' scheme for Internet content. The scheme
aims to address community concerns about offensive and illegal material on
the Internet and, in particular, to protect children from exposure to material
that is unsuitable for them.
Members of the public may complain to the ABA about Internet content (including
Internet gambling content), which is, or may be, prohibited by law. If the
Internet content is determined to be offensive then a “take down”
order may be served on the offending Internet content host.
