Neighbourhood Watch

Welcome

Welcome to the Neighbourhood Watch Queensland (NHWQ) website. This website forms part of the ongoing commitment the Queensland Police Service (QPS) has to support Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) in its efforts to strengthen and connect our communities for a safe and secure Queensland. The website has been created by the Community Safety and Crime Prevention Branch (CSCPB) after consultation with the community, police and other NHW partners.

During the period October 2009 to early 2010 significant changes will occur to this website. As we move forward into 2010 and with the launch of a new and more interactive website we ask for your patience.

During this time any NHWQ inquiries can be directed to your local District Crime Prevention Office by clicking on the ‘Am I in a Neighbourhood Watch’ link located on the left hand side of this page.

A new NHWQ Strategy for the period 2009 – 2013 has been developed and was announced at the NHWQ State Conference in Brisbane on Saturday 3 October 2009. Please click on the following link to view this strategy and further communications will follow with relevant supporting documents.NHWQ Strategy 2009-2013 ( NHWQ Strategy 2009-2013|526835|application/pdf 514.49K )

What is Neighbourhood Watch?

NHW is both a philosophy and an approach to working together as a community to reduce crime and enhance community safety.  NHW has been operating in Queensland since 1988. NHWQ encourages residents to join together in small informal groups for the purpose of improving the safety of their families and other people who live, visit and do business in their neighbourhood.  It also encourages interaction and a shared sense of responsibility between individuals, neighbours and communities for preventing and reducing crime.

Traditionally NHWQ has focused on improving home security, reducing the fear of crime and reporting suspicious activity to police.  As NHWQ has evolved, groups have become involved in broader community safety issues - working together to identify and address local problems that may not involve crime.  NHWQ has been successful in building community cohesion and improving relationships between neighbours which assists in reducing crime and the fear of crime.  It has a very strong and committed volunteer base and is an Internationally well-recognised and established symbol within the community.

The QPS is committed to working in partnership with the community and greatly appreciates the outstanding contribution that the many NHWQ groups and volunteers make for a safer and more secure Queensland.
