Community Supporting Police
History and Background
| Community Supporting Police Inc. was formed in Brisbane in 1990 immediately following the release of the Fitzgerald Inquiry Report. Concerns were raised at a public forum about the lack of support for police and their families and as a result a public meeting was held and Community Supporting Police Inc. was formed. The inaugural committee consisted of family members and members of interested community groups. The original accommodation used by CSP Inc. was at Rosalie House in Rosalie and at Woody Point, near Redcliffe. Currently CSP Inc. manages one residential house (Perry Irwin House, Nundah) and three units at Herston and Toowong. All have been made available by the Queensland Police Service to provide emergency accommodation to police and their families in times of crisis and trauma. Funds raised by the organisation in Brisbane help to maintain these facilities. There is a very high occupancy rate for all emergency accommodation which reflects the ongoing need for such facilities across the State. Housing is also located in Toowoomba, Townsville, Rockhampton, Cairns and Mareeba. These facilities are managed through the local Branch of CSP Inc. |  |
CSP Inc. is very much a community driven organisation and a great deal of support is given by the Queensland Police Service. The organisation generates a great deal of good - firstly, by way of the physical support for police families in need, and secondly, by the interaction with and support given by the community itself through organisations like Rotary, Lions, Scouts, Guides, church groups, youth groups, ethnic groups, and business people. Branches have been formed in Cairns, Mareeba, Townsville, Rockhampton and Toowoomba and reflect the truly decentralised makeup of the State. CSP Inc. is mindful that success can only be achieved if a concerted effort is made by all and invite interested persons and corporations to become involved in this very worthwhile organisation.
