Rape, Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence and Stalking

Overview

The topics contained within this section are somewhat sensitive in nature and should be presented accordingly. When delivering presentations it is imperative you are aware that members of your audience may be directly involved in situations where rape, sexual assault, domestic violence and/or stalking are occurring or have occurred.

Presenters should remain open, non-judgmental and positive to all questions and comments received. It is also important to provide an opportunity for questions to be asked, whether that be throughout the presentation or at the end. Ensure that your audience is aware of your availability to talk with them privately, either at the end of the session or by contacting you at a later date via contact details provided.

Note: Keep in mind the Protective Behaviours strategy ‘Protective Interrupting’, which may be necessary to implement if a member of the audience decides to disclose personal information in front of the group.

You are also encouraged to provide your audience with a referral list containing various organisations/services available to them. Referrals lists are also located at the back of the Personal Safety Strategies and Safety Strategies for Teenagers brochures. These brochures are currently being rewritten, however will be available in January 2001.

Remember your advice and assistance may have a direct effect on the attitudes and personal lives of those in your audience. You have a unique opportunity to positively impact on their quality of life.
