Contacting Emergency Services
Urgent assistance requiredFor URGENT help from any Queensland emergency service - fire, police, ambulance - dial 000 (triple zero) on your telephone.
Only dial 000 for an emergency that is life-threatening or to report a serious offence in progress.
Calling 000 connects you to an operator who will ask you which emergency service you need, and from where you are calling. After answering these simple questions, you immediately will be connected to the emergency service you require.
TourSafe Tip: Emergency telephone operators only speak English.
TourSafe Tip: It is very important that you remain calm and clearly describe exactly where you are and what is happening.
If you have witnessed an offence or you believe you have information that may assist police, telephone or visit the local police station (business hours are displayed at the front of the police station). The details of the nearest local police station are listed in the white pages section of the telephone book, under Police.
If you have information for police regarding an unsolved offence, or an offence police are currently seeking public assistance with, telephone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The Queensland Police Service is here to help the community, which includes all visitors to Queensland. If you have a problem during your visit that police can assist with, contact us so we can help you.
TourSafe Tip: Be considerate towards your family and friends. It is important to keep in regular contact with them while you are away, so they know you are safe.
Assisting the Queensland Police Service
- General (non-urgent) inquiries can be made at most police stations throughout Queensland between the hours of 8am and 4pm. Office times in country areas may differ, so telephone first.
- If you are in a public place and asked by police to leave the location, please do so. You may be committing an offence if you ignore a police officer's 'move on' request.
- Always carry identification details with you, a photocopy of your passport and any other type of photo identification.
- If you are in a public place and are approached by police, you may be required to supply your name and address.
- If you are present when a disturbance or other offence occurs, avoid becoming involved. If police are called and you can assist, wait until order is restored to the area and then approach the police officers and ask them if you can help with their inquiries.
- Police support the legitimate claims of people who have had their belongings stolen. However, due to an increase in travel insurance fraud, police will fully investigate false claims and expose any fraud offenders. It is an offence to deliberately make a false or misleading crime report to police.
