Walking around towns and cities
When walking around busy towns and city centres, be careful when crossing roads. As a pedestrian, the traffic closest to you should be approaching you from your right hand side. Before crossing the road, look to your right first, then left, then right again. It seems like common sense to most, but if you are used to traffic flowing the other way, it is easy to forget to look to the right first. Where available, use pedestrian crossings to cross the road safely. Top
- Always plan your hike. Find out how long it should take you to get there and to return.
- Tell someone at the camp where you are going and when you expect to be returning.
- Take enough water, suitable clothing and basic emergency and overnight items.
- Check the weather forecast, and always prepare for sudden weather changes.
- Don't go walking in remote areas alone.
- If travelling or camping in remote areas, consider hiring safety communications equipment, such as an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB), or a satellite phone.
- Always stay on marked trails. Taking shortcuts is not only damaging to the bushland area, but can also be very dangerous.
