Personal Violence and Fear of Crime
Overview
By examining the common trends and contributing factors of personal violence, in addition to the impact of, extent and contributing factors of the fear of crime, an understanding of a number of aspects may be gained.
Firstly, police are able to develop an insight into the many false perceptions held by community members, by examining the corresponding facts to dispel these myths.
Secondly, by gaining an understanding of the actual risks associated with a range of personal violence offences, police are able to assist in placing the fear of crime into perspective, and offer practical preventative safety strategies to minimise these risks.
When delivering personal safety presentations and advice, police are encouraged to educate community members in relation to each of these topics and provide strategies to counter the negative effects of each. Subsequently, community members will be better equipped to maintain their personal safety, possessing an understanding of why suggested preventative strategies are effective.
