Permits to Acquire

1. Who can acquire a firearm?

Anyone who is over the age of 18 years and holds an issued weapons licence may lawfully acquire a firearm of the category endorsed on their licence by way of a Permit to Acquire (PTA).

Minor’s Licences and Security Licence (Guards)-Employee do not authorise the acquisition of firearms.

Section 40 of the Weapons Regulations 1996 requires a person attend their local Queensland Police Station to make application. The applicant is required to show current photographic identification. Fees are applicable for this application.

2. How to acquire a weapon

You must have an issued Permit to Acquire (PTA) prior to acquiring a firearm. Once you are in possession of your issued PTA, you may take possession of your firearm. The issued PTA must be handed to the disposer to peruse prior to taking possession of your firearm. If the firearm is not acquired from a firearms dealer, you must take the firearm to a firearms dealer to enable the brokerage and transfer of registration to your licence.

3. What is a Permit to Acquire?

A PTA authorises a Weapons Act licence holder to purchase or acquire a firearm or other weapon. A PTA must be obtained from the Weapons Licensing Branch before a firearm or weapon is purchased. To obtain a PTA, the prospective owner must have a licence authorising possession of the firearm or weapon they wish to purchase or acquire.

4. Who does not need a Permit to Acquire?

Licensed dealers may acquire a weapon without a permit however they are bound by other reporting conditions.

A PTA may not be required for antique firearms
