Disposing my Firearms
1. Disposal of Weapons
If you do not wish to retain possession of a firearm/s, you may choose to dispose of them by one of the following means:
- Relinquish your firearm to the Queensland Police Service at a Queensland police station; or
- Sell your firearms to a dealer; or
- Dispose of your firearm/s to a licensed dealer for consignment sale on your behalf; or
- Sell it to someone who is a holder of an issued Permit to Acquire for the firearm/s in question. A Permit to Acquire is required for each firearm being acquired. You must view an issued Permit to Acquire prior to disposing of the firearms to the acquirer; or
- Place the firearm/s for safekeeping with another licensed person who is licensed for the same categories. Safekeeping by another licensed holder apart from a dealer or armourer is only permitted for a period of 3 months after which arrangements need to be made to dispose of the firearm/s appropriately as stated above. The Weapons Licensing Branch must be advised in writing of any weapons being safekept by a licence holder.
2. Disposal of Weapons Interstate
If you have disposed of your firearm/s to an interstate licence holder Specific documentation is required for this type of transfer, namely:
- Name of person to whom the firearm/s were disposed;
- Address of person to whom the firearm/s were disposed;
- Firearms Licence Number of person to whom the firearm/s were disposed;
- Date of disposal of firearm/s
3. Destroying Weapons
You cannot destroy a firearm, you may only dispose of them. Refer to information regarding disposal of weapons. If your firearm has been damaged beyond repair (e.g. run over by a vehicle) or you do not wish to have the firearm repaired it must still be handed into a Queensland police station or a licensed Queensland dealer.
You may wish to damage your firearm to prevent any further use, however the firearm must be surrendered to either the Queensland Police Service or a licensed firearms dealer for destruction.
Separate procedures are in place for the destruction of firearms by licensed firearms dealers.
