Safekeeping of Firearms
Your firearm/s can be safekept by a dealer/armourer or another licensed person who holds a licence for the appropriate category of firearm to safekeep with some restrictions.
You can put your firearm/s in safekeeping with a dealer/armourer for an indefinite period. A dealer/armourer can safekeep both a registered and accept an unregistered firearm for registration. The dealer will advise Weapons Licensing that the firearm is held at their premises for safekeeping.
A licence holder apart from an armourer or dealer may safekeep your registered firearm/s for only 3 months, after which the firearm/s in question must be lawfully disposed. Weapons Licensing must be advised in writing of any weapons being safekept by a licence holder. If you safekeep firearm/s for more than 3 months you are unlawfully in possession and may be subject to prosecution.
Safekeepers must ensure that they hold a licence for the category of firearm they are intending to safekeep. The firearms must be registered. An unregistered firearm CANNOT BE safekept by a licence holder. The firearm must first be registered on the Commissioner’s firearms register.
