General Information

Section 24 of the Weapons Act 1990 and section 14 of the Weapons Regulations 1996 stipulates a licensee’s responsibilities when a change in circumstance that affects their licence occurs.

Where a licensee has a change in any of the circumstances surrounding the issue of the licence, or any material particular in relation to the licence, the licensee must advise their local officer in charge of police within 14 days of the change.

A change of circumstance includes, but is not limited to:

  • a change of address;
  • a change in the licensee's or the licensee's representative's mental or physical fitness;
  • the conviction of the licensee or the licensee's representative of an offence relating to the misuse of drugs, or the use or threatened use of violence, or the use, carriage, discharge or possession of firearms;
  • the making of a domestic violence order against the licensee or the licensee's representative;
  • a change in the licensee's reason or need for possessing or using a weapon, or access to secure storage facilities for the licensee's weapons;
  • a change in the licence or licensee’s representative’s name;
  • a change in the place entered in the firearms register as the place where a firearm is generally kept;
  • a change in dealer’s associates;
  • the revocation of the licensee's permission to shoot on a landowner's rural land.
