Applying for a Collector’s Licence (Heirloom)

The following is further information about applying for this specific licence type in addition to what is provided in “Obtaining a new licence”.

It is important you refer to both the general steps in applying for a licence and the further information provided here.

This will ensure all necessary information is provided in your application.

A collector's licence (heirloom) may be issued to an individual who has had a firearm (other than a Category R) handed down to them as part of a will or bequeath. Any firearm held on this licence is required to be rendered permanently inoperable. The licensee may only possess one firearm on this licence.

This licence may be endorsed for a Category A, B, C, D, H, or M weapon that has been rendered permanently inoperable.

Application for a collectors licence (heirloom)

You must provide:

  •  A completed Form 1 - Application for a Licence;
  • Proof that the applicant is the owner of the firearm due to a testamentary disposition or the laws of succession. Such proof would normally include a statutory declaration or a letter from a solicitor;
  • Certification from an armourer or approved person that the firearm has been rendered permanently inoperable (Form 31);
  • Advice as to the security precautions to be taken to ensure the safekeeping of all weapons to be held by the applicant. This should include an indication of whether or not these precautions meet the current standards set by the Act (Sections 39-44 of the Weapons Regulation 1996 refers).
