Applying for a Firearms Licence

The following is further information about applying for this specific licence type in addition to what is provided in “Obtaining a new licence”

It is important you refer to both the general steps in applying for a licence and the further information provided here.

This will ensure all necessary information is provided in your application.

Occupational (Other)

Paintball Gallery employee (category A only)

You will only need to apply for a licence to engage in paintball activities if you wish to acquire a paintball firearm.  For an application for a licence you will need to complete a Form 1 – Application for a Licence and provide a letter from a paintball field official confirming that you have permission to play paintball at that club from the shooting gallery representative. 

Paintball employees need to provide a letter from a paintball field official stating that they are an employee of the business and need to access weapons as a part of their duties.

Aerial feral animal controllers (categories A, B, C, D)

If you intend to use category D firearm from an aircraft for the purposes of animal control you must provide;

  • A copy of current authorisation issued under the provisions of Civil Aviation Authority permitting the carriage and use of firearms in and from the aircraft;
  • Proof that you are currently engaged or employed for the purpose of aerial animal control
  • Letters or contracts from property owners, or letters of intent from government departments e.g. Department of Natural Resources.  These letters should include the property owners’ names, contact details, property sizes and surrounding features and type of terrain, extent of problems being encountered, the proposed action and the method of control which is currently being used.
  • Details of who will be flying the aircraft and who will be using the weapons
  • Type and calibre of weapons intended to be registered to this licence.

Commercial Fisher (categories A, B, C)

You must complete Form 1 - Application for a Licence and provide the following:

  • A copy of your current boat registration documentation where applicable;
  • A copy of your current Commercial Fisher Licence, issued by the Department of Primary Industries; and
  • Details of the type of commercial fishing being conducted and reasons why a firearm is necessary. 

If you require the use of Powerhead weapons provide details as to the duties for which a weapon of this type is required for. 

Commercial Wildlife Harvester (category A and B)

You must complete Form 1 – Application for a Licence and provide either of the following:

A copy of your current Commercial Wildlife Harvesting Licence, issued by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services; or

A “Letter of Intent” from Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services to issue you with a Commercial Wildlife Harvesting Licence when you become the holder of a firearms licence.

Accredited Game Meat Harvester (category A and B only)

You must complete Form 1 – Application for a Licence and provide a copy of your current Certificate of Accreditation issued by SafeFood Queensland and also a letter from a property owner authorising you to shoot on the property owner’s land.  This letter is to detail the location, total area and description of the property. 

Government Service Entity

If you are employed by a government service entity you must complete Form 1 – Application for a Licence and provide a letter from your employer, verifying that you are employed by a Government Service Entity and which outlines the duties for which firearms are necessary and the categories of firearms required.

Government Service Entity means –

 (a)   a department of the Government of the State: or
 (b)   a museum under the control of the Government of the State or the Commonwealth; or
 (c)   another entity prescribed under a regulation that –

 (i) is established under an Act or under State authorisation for a public or State purpose; or
 (ii) is engaged by the State or an entity mentioned in subparagraph (i) to provide a service for the State or entity;

but does not include the Queensland Police Service.

Government Service Entities would include bodies such as Department of Primary Industries, Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Environment and Heritage.

Animal controllers - Government

If you are an employee of a Council or Authority or Other Government entity you must complete Form 1 – Application for a Licence and provide a letter from your employer verifying the reason/s why firearms are necessary and the nature of duties undertaken by you.  A list of other employees with an occupational licence for the council or authority must be provided as well. 

Feral animal controllers on a property - Categories A, B, C, D

If you are an animal controller on a property you will need to provide the following information

  • Business details such as registered business name
  • Contracts from property owners you are providing service to.
  • Information in relation to the frequency of visit/s to the properties, details of types of firearms you intend to use in the conduct of your duties and why you have chosen the particular type of firearm must also be provided. 

Note: This information must accompany your Form 1 – Application for a Licence.  If you are also applying for category H use, you will need to complete a separate application.  

Occupational – Other (Employment Purposes) – Categories, A, B, C, D or H

This may include

  • Veterinary Surgeons (categories A, B only)
  • Prawn/Fish Farms (A, B & C only),
  • Mobile Butchers (category A & B only)
  • Livestock Transporters (A & B only)

If your business requires the use of firearms in the conduct of your business/occupation, you must complete a Form 1 – Application for a Licence and provide a letter on your business letterhead outlining specifically why the firearms are required and the categories of firearms required.  You must also advise if there are other members of your staff requiring the use of these firearms.  Employees of the business must supply a “letter of authority” from their employer verifying the application details and detailing the reasons why the applicant requires the firearm in the course of their employment and nature of the duties performed.    

For Prawn/Fish farm purposes, if firearms are used to shoot birds, you must provide a Damage Mitigation permit indicating bird problems exist.  Details such as the size of the prawn/fish farm must also accompany the application for a licence. 

NOTE:  Category D licences are only issued for 1 year.
