Applying for a Firearms Licence (Instructor)

The following is further information about applying for this specific licence type in addition to what is provided in “Obtaining a new licence”

It is important you refer to both the general steps in applying for a licence and the further information provided here.

This will ensure all necessary information is provided in your application.

Application for a Firearms Licence (Instructor) may be made by completing Form 1 – Application for a Licence.  The application must be lodged in person at your local Queensland police station and accompanied by the prescribed fees and required documentation.

You must provide the following documentation in support of your application:

  • Proof of the successful completion of the approved training course for Security Licensing (Guard) (PRS30103) and/or the Course in Firearms Safety - 30655QLD.  Provide a Statement of Attainment issued within the last 12 months that contains the following information: The date the certificate was awarded, the modules completed in the course, the categories of weapons in which you have been deemed competent and the name of the registered training provider;

Or details of any current weapons licences held.

  • Evidence of your current Registered Training Organisation (RTO) registration with the Department of Education, Training and the Arts (DETA) as an approved provider of a Course for Security Licensing (Guard) (PRS30103) and/or the Course in Firearms Safety 30655QLD;

Or, a letter of authorisation from a RTO registered with DETA as the provider of a course approved by the Commissioner under the Weapons Act 1990. This letter should contain details of: the registered number of the registered RTO course provider, the courses you are authorised to instruct, the period of time the authorisation is valid and where the course instruction will take place.

  • Evidence of your qualification and/or experience in relation to the development, presentation and evaluation of modules, and assessment of participants (minimum requirement – if registered training organisation RTO possess Certificate IV for Workplace Training; if authorised by RTO – trainer and assessor competencies).
  • Evidence of your practical experience in the handling and use of weapons. This may be presented in the form of a resume and include copies of the relevant certificates, awards and proofs of membership.
