Licence Renewal Guide
Q1. Do I need to supply photos and proof of identity?
Yes. You must complete the Proof of Identity Declaration (Form 30) and attach two recent passport sized photographs. Photographs must be signed by an ‘approved person’ listed on the Form 30. However this is not necessary if you have provided recent photographs within the last 3 years for a replacement licence or to renew another licence.
Q2. What information is required to support my genuine reason for possessing a weapon?
The Application to Renew a Weapons Act Licence (Form 6) details what information is required to support your genuine reason, and asks you to select a genuine reason for each category of weapon you possess.
Please note the following in relation to genuine reasons:
- Recreational shooting OR occupational requirement (primary production/rural purposes):
Refer to the 'Letter of Permission' or 'Primary Producer / Rural Purposes Declaration' included with the Form 6 to assist you to provide all the necessary information required by the Weapons Licensing Branch. - Sports or target shooters (for members of shooting clubs/associations):
Provide proof of current financial membership to an approved shooting club or association, including expiry date and weapons categories relevant to the membership (e.g. A, B & H). If these details are not on your membership card, your club or association should provide you with this information. - Any other genuine reason:
Refer to Question 2 of the Application to Renew Licence (Form 6) for the information required. If you are unsure of what is required, contact the Weapons Licensing Branch by telephone on 3364 4579 or via email or by fax on 3364 4863.
Q3. Are all of my weapons registered?
All applicants are forwarded a renewal kit approximately three months prior to the expiry of their licence. The kit will include a weapons list form which details all firearm(s) / weapon(s) currently registered to your licence. Please check the details and provide written advice of any corrections you believe are necessary. The declaration at the bottom of each page of the form must be signed. The signed declaration must be submitted with your renewal application.
If you possess any firearm(s) / weapon(s) not included on the Weapons List, please provide full details of the firearm(s) / weapon(s) (i.e. category, make, model, calibre and serial number), the name, address and licence number of the person you acquired the firearm(s) / weapon(s) from, and the date you acquired the firearm(s) / weapon(s).
If you no longer possess any firearm(s) / weapon(s) listed on the form, please provide the name, address and licence number of the person who now possesses the firearm(s) / weapon(s).
Q4. How do I lodge my application?
Your application must be lodged in person at your local police station. Do not post your application. Many stations require cash payment only and carry limited change facilities. Ensure you bring the correct fee for the type of licence and the period you wish to renew. To avoid delays, contact your local police station to organise a suitable time to lodge your application and clarify any other payment restrictions. Make sure your application includes all documents specified in Step 2 of the checklist. You must lodge the application and all necessary information at least the day before your licence expires.
Q5. I can't obtain the proof of genuine reason and/or Proof of Identity before the day my licence expires. What should I do?
Contact Weapons Licensing Branch immediately to obtain advice. You may still be able to lodge your application at a Queensland Police Station before the licence expires.
