The Safety House Program began in Queensland in 1983. The program is administered by the Safety House Association of Queensland Inc. which consists of a State Council, regional and local committees. The Association is a non-profit, non-government organisation safeguarding the interests of the community and is supported by the Queensland Police Service and Education Queensland.
The Safety House Program relies on a network of houses and business premises throughout the community that display the Safety House Logo, for children and other community members to use whenever they are feeling frightened or unsafe, regardless of the reason. The Safety House logo is a smiling house on a yellow background and is widely recognised by the community.
The aim of the program is to play a proactive role in the community safety, by providing safer neighbourhoods for community members and personal safety education programs for senior groups, other organisations and children within schools affiliated with the Safety House Association.
