Property identification and recording

Marking and recording your property helps deter theft and provides proof of ownership.

By marking and recording your property, you will also assist police in identifying and returning stolen property to its rightful owner.

What you can do

Offenders usually steal items of value which can be quickly converted to cash. Consider these steps to protect your property and valuables:

  • Engrave your belongings – however seek advice from your District Crime Prevention Coordinator before using an engraver as not all items are suitable for engraving.
  • Mark your property with a unique personal code in the top right-hand corner of the item or near to the manufacturer’s serial number.
  • Use identification (ID) warning stickers on personal property, windows and doors to deter potential offenders. ID stickers are available from your local Neighbourhood Watch Group or District Crime Prevention Coordinator
  • Keep photographic records of your property which cannot be engraved such as jewellery, art, collectables, silverware and stamp and coin collections. When taking photos, use a ruler or matchbox beside the item to help identify size.
  • Maintain an inventory list of all serial numbers, model numbers and specific features of your personal property and keep the list and any valuation certificates in a safe place.
  • Consider providing your details and personal codes to your local police.
  • Further information can be found on the Property Identification Information Sheet.
