When Travelling

When out sightseeing, it is advisable not to carry all your cash and traveller's cheques. Take only sufficient currency for your immediate needs and leave the rest in a safe place - your hotel safe for example.

If there is no alternative, then consider keeping your cash in separate places and your cheques in another. Do not under any circumstances give the impression that you are carrying a lot of money.

It is also advisable to carry with you some identification and any special medical information in case of an accident.

When driving, particularly at night, keep the car doors locked, and do not pick up hitch-hikers. Should you wish to drive into the sparselypopulated outback areas, advise someone of where you are going, your estimated time of arrival, carry drinking water in your vehicle, and of course have sufficient petrol. If you vehicle breaks down, do not try to walk for help, stay with your vehicle.

Queensland occasionally is subjected to Cyclones (Hurricanes):

  • Take heed of warnings (on Radio & T.V.).
  • For further information if a cyclone is in the area you are visiting contact your local Police Station.

In summer, some Queensland country roads are subject to flooding. For driving conditions and expert tips on driving in Queensland ring the local branch of the RACQ (Royal Automobile Club of Queensland).

It should be noted that most of Queensland's major cities are well-served with public transport and good taxi services. There is a variety of coach-tours that embrace most of the tourist-spots throughout the state. Also there are good inter-city bus and train services available.

Remember... You Must:

  • Wear a seat belt when in a vehicle
  • Drive on the left hand side of the road.
  • Have a valid International License when driving.
  • Wear a Motor/Push bike helmet when riding a motorcycle or pushbike.

Knowing the Ropes

When you are lazing in the warm Queensland sun, by your hotel or motel pool, perhaps on one of our 5000 islands, or on a stretch of our 2000 km of mainly sandy coastline, it is easy to forget your troubles or cares....or the rules.

Remember, in Queensland it is a serious offence to drive while under the influence of liquor or a drug, to carry any concealable firearm or other weapon, or to use or be in possession of illegal drugs such as marijuana, heroin, cocaine etc.

Keeping in Touch

If you are in Queensland for an extended period, maintain regular phone or mail contact with your family or friends at home. They'll enjoy hearing from you and about your holiday. Your consideration could prevent an unnecessary search. Carry with you a list of contactable relatives and their phone numbers.
