A Phone Call a Day, to Say You're OK

Australian Red Cross Logo

Neighbourhood Watch is all about making your community a safer place to live, and this includes looking out for your neighbours. Sometimes, however, we may have an elderly friend or relative living alone who do not have the support of people close by to pop in and check up on how everything is going. One solution helping to make people feel safer in their own homes is the fantastic free service Telecross run by the Red Cross.

Through Telecross the elderly, isolated people and people with a disability or who are medically at risk can receive a short, friendly call each morning from a Red Cross volunteer. If the person is in distress or the call is unanswered the Telecross Service will initiate an emergency procedure, getting in touch with people who have been listed as your emergency contacts, and who have a set of keys for your house.

This service is available every day of the year and can be provided on a temporary basis, if for example your carer will be away. This program is a great way to ensure that you, a friend or a family member are ready to tackle the day ahead. For further information or to become a volunteer for this program contact the Red Cross on 1300 55 44 19.
