Community Safety Project Moves into Stage 3

The Community Safety Project, a joint initiative between NHW, the Department of Emergency Services (DES) and the Queensland Police continues to expand with the recent launch of stage three at Caboolture.

The project, which has been implemented into nine NHW communities as part of stages one and two aims to promote a community safety focus through the implementation of DES and QPS safety strategies. To date initiatives carried out under the Community Safety Project include CPR training, kerbside numbering projects, Fire Service Operation Safe Home visits, open days, and the trial of the first Queensland Junior NHW at the Harrisfields State School.

The official launch of stage three was conduct by the Honourable Chris Cummins MP, Minister for Emergency Services with over 100 people in attendance. Acting Police Commissioner Dick Condor said at the launch "many NHW groups were struggling to maintain community interest as they had successfully applied the crime prevention initiatives of the program. I recognised that by broadening the crime prevention focus of NHW areas though this project to include community safety, the NHW program would continue to enjoy the support of the community."

Stage three of the project also welcomed the Department of Housing through the Community Renewal Program as a new partner. In line with a recent government commitment, Stage three will focus on implementing the project in six 'at risk' communities with Community Renewal staff playing a significant role in identifying and facilitating community interaction. The project's steering committee is currently identifying NHW areas around the state to implement the project with two Caboolture areas, Caboolture 10 and 15 already accepting the challenge.

Areas interested in finding out more information about the project should consult the Community Safety Kit recently sent to all areas or contact the Department of Emergency Services on 1300 369 003.
