Fight Fire with Fire

With summer quickly creeping up on us, and the incidences of fire widespread at present, Queensland Fire fighters are warning people to develop a fire escape plan.

"Most people think they will have no trouble finding their way out of their home in an emergency, but thick smoke, minimal visibility and effects of smoke inhalation can cause people to panic, lose their bearings and get trapped in their own homes", says a spokesperson from the Qld Fire & Rescue Service.

A fire escape plan should have two exits from each room and a safe meeting place outside. Families should practise their escape, remembering to crawl as close to the floor as you can, and once outside never re-enter the building. When practising your escape, always meet at the same place so you can easily do a head count.

Remember, smoke alarms provide an early warning of fire, but an escape route can also save lives. Plan your escape now - don't wait for an emergency.
