School Watch Surges Ahead

School Watch

In the November issue of the NHW newsletter, a survey regarding the School Watch Program was sent out to all NHW groups across the State.

An excellent response to this survey was received, with 340 surveys returned. Approximately half of the respondents indicated that their NHW group watches over their local schools.

Respondents were also given the opportunity to provide their contact details so that their local school could get in touch to discuss local crime prevention issues and ways in which each group could assist the other. In all, over 135 respondents have taken up this opportunity, which has been a very positive outcome, both for the schools and the NHW groups.

In March this year, these details were provided to the Principals of schools as indicated on the survey and some of the benefits anticipated in the future include:

  • Exchange of local crime prevention information
  • Possible use of the school facilities for NHW meetings
  • Opportunity for students to become involved in NHW
  • Increased awareness of upcoming school or community events
  • Integration of school, NHW, Police and local council initiatives

A spokesman from Education Queensland said: "The response from NHW groups has been excellent and demonstrates their commitment towards safe and secure communities and schools. Building local partnerships such as these is a positive for students, parents and community members alike."

If your NHW group has not already participated in this partnership activity, but would like to get involved, please call Education Queensland on (07) 3235 4632 and your details will be forwarded to the Principal of your local school.
