Confident, Safe & Secure
Working for the Crime Prevention Unit has really given me a sense of perspective when it comes to being safe and secure. I no longer do the gardening with the front door wide open, make sure to put my wheelie bins out of sight so I don’t tempt any would-be thief, and let my neighbours know when I am going away for a few days. My experiences have also led me to be more vigilant and aware of people and surroundings when I am out and about.
One of the major issues I have perceived is the lack of attention people pay to keeping their money safe. I often see people forget their surroundings when they are doing the shopping, paying for a product, or using an ATM. This can be as simple as leaving your handbag in a trolley unattended, to counting your money from an ATM in a public place.
When using an ATM make sure you use where you can be seen by other people. Take note of who is around you, and if you feel uncomfortable or under scrutiny, cancel your transaction. When you receive money, do not present yourself as a target by counting your money in a public place. Place the money in your wallet and if you need to sort out money for bills, sit down in the actual bank or agency. If you are sitting in a public place having lunch, don’t leave your wallet lying on the table as anyone can quickly and easily grab it and run. If you are in a public toilet or in a fitting room avoid leaving your handbag on the floor where it can be easily grabbed from under the door. By being proactive and aware you can reduce the chance of becoming a target.
