Crime Stoppers Queensland

Queensland's most effective tool in the fight to solve crime

28 years ago a Detective in New Mexico was investigating a double murder. 3 months later they still did not have one piece of information that would identify who the offenders were. It was surveyed that people did not share information with police because they were either afraid and/or apathetic.

As a result of this research the Detective introduced a new program to solve the crime by dealing with these issues. He understood that people were hesitant to become involved without an incentive, so a reward was offered to any person who provided information that lead to an arrest. He recognised the fear of exposure and repercussions callers may feel, and so offered anonymity for callers. To trigger people’s memories, a re-enactment of the crime was played on TV news coverage. Within 24 hours, persons provided information that lead to the arrest of those responsible.

The success of the program was expanded to include all crimes within the state, later becoming national across the USA and eventually worldwide. There are over 1,000 programs in 10 countries and they are all operated under the same guidelines – Anonymity and Rewards. Solving crimes via Crime Stoppers involves the police, the media and the community. If we want to see a difference in our communities then it is up to each of us to do something to help. Be the change you want to see in the world.
