Vale (Wal) Ivan Walter COSTELLO
Annerley 10 and the NHW Community are mourning the recent loss of Wal Costello, one of its most dedicated and enthusiastic members. Wal had freely given his time and support to the Annerley 10 NHW since its inception, including his last role as Area-coordinator. Under his stewardship Annerley 10 NHW grew with strong support from the community. Wal realised that the NHW area comprised of 2 distinct age/generation groups, the young and active and the not so young and active. To assist the not so young members who preferred not to venture to NHW meetings in the evening, Wal and the committee set about and successfully implemented the concept of day time meetings for the senior members and evening meetings for the younger members.
Wal's legendary skills as a cook were evident in the regular presentation of easy to follow but most enjoyable recipes which he provided to the NHW area through the Annerley NHW 10 Newsletter. Wal was a strong supporter of NHW and attended all Divisional, District, Regional and several State NHW Conferences. He actively promoted the benefits of community involvement in Crime Prevention and other community projects. He also raised the profile with local businesses and was never backward in coming forward in seeking support and assistance by way of lucky door prizes to be raffled at meetings.
His wish to generate awareness of NHW and its benefits saw Wal and the committee conduct Christmas parties for the children in the local area. Through his perseverance and motivation these events were always well attended and supported by families, with children who attended receiving gifts from Santa. To try and generate further support and community Wal was deliberate in ensuring the Mums and Dads also had a great time.
In appreciation for his dedication to the NHW Program Wal was recognized with the Silver NHW Lapel in 2002 and a Gold Lapel in 2004. Wal will best be remembered for his commitment to making his community a friendly and safer place to live. The NHW Community extends our deepest sympathies to Wal's family and friends.
